It felt wrong to leave China without setting foot on its most iconic landmark, the <strong>Great Wall of China<\/strong>. But instead of heading to the popular Badaling section, we went for <strong>Mutianyu<\/strong> \u2014 known for being slightly less crowded, better preserved, and easier to reach from the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/\/image-43.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-43.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-43-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-43-768x510.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutianyu is about an hour and a half from Beijing by car, a smooth journey that slowly transitions from urban sprawl to winding mountain roads. By the time we reached the entrance, the morning mist was still hanging low, the air crisp and dry. We arrived early, hoping to beat the tour buses, and that made all the difference. The silence of the mountain greeted us before the crowds did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/\/image-44.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-44.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-44-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-44-768x510.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A short cable car ride took us up the slope, and the moment we stepped out, the Great Wall came into view \u2014 rising and falling along the ridges like a dragon\u2019s spine. It\u2019s one of those sights that hits you instantly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/\/image-45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-45.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-45-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-45-768x510.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve seen it a thousand times in photos, but standing there, surrounded by centuries of history, is something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/\/image-46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-46.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-46-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-46-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We started walking, slowly at first, climbing the uneven stone steps that have carried millions before us. The first few towers were lively, filled with early risers taking photos and catching their breath. But as we pushed on, the noise faded. Fewer people. More wind. Beyond that point, the Wall was almost empty. Just us, the mountains, and the sound of the breeze brushing against the old stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the secret to Mutianyu: <strong>arrive early, and walk a little farther than most people are willing to.<\/strong> The Wall rewards you for the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/\/image-49.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-49.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-49-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/wp-content\/image-49-768x510.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the way, we noticed graffiti etched onto some bricks \u2014 names, hearts, countries. It broke my heart a little to see \u201cMalaysia\u201d among them. It\u2019s one thing to leave footprints, another to leave scars. There\u2019s a kind of magic in its imperfection  the uneven steps, the worn bricks, the silence in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutianyu may be one of the more \u201ctouristy\u201d sections, but that doesn\u2019t make it any less profound. It\u2019s where history meets human perseverance, where centuries-old walls continue to hold stories of defence, pride, and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time we descended, the crowd had arrived in full force.
