This brand new 4-star hotel is the only hotel of its class in the area. Located just 5 minutes from the Udawalawe National Park (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/index.php\/2012\/11\/28\/udawalawe-national-park-up-close-with-the-sri-lankan-wild-elephants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> to read about my safari trip to this park), it makes perfect sense to stop and spend a night here after the 4-hours flight from KL to Colombo and 6-hours drive from Colombo to Udawalawe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort (G.U.S.R) at about 7:00pm and it was raining, dark and as if that no one was there. We can only hear the sound of rain and out of nowhere two friendly hotel personnel welcomed and ushered us to the lobby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hotel blends is well with the natural ambience and the jungle atmosphere with the shade of the stately Kumbuk trees, which were to provide guests of the hotel the coolness and to maintain the healthy quality of the air and water.<\/p>\n<p>Check-in was done in a very personal manner. We were asked to have a seat and enjoy the welcome drinks and hot towels (something we really appreciate off after 10 hours of travelling!) while all the forms and payments were being sorted out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During check-in, we were told that there were only few guests for the night. A less than a month old hotel with 57 rooms, a lot of staff and yes just the few of us as guests. I guess this is an advantage of choosing a new hotel. \ud83d\ude42 It was so quiet that throughout our stay we did not see any other guest except at the lobby when we checked out. This is how it feels being a VIP!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We chose to stay at the deluxe room that matches with our trip budget.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The room has a simple design and decorated with nature and luxury in mind. Not an easy task to balance those two elements but I personally think GUSR did a good job in designing the rooms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Welcome!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Comfy beds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Guests can expect basic facilities such as air-cond and ceiling fan!, Hot and cold water , 24 hour TV, Mini bar, Direct dialing telephone facilities (including IDD)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/10.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And a clean toilet!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a well-deserved hot shower, my wife and I head to the hotel\u2019s restaurant for my \u201cbirthday diner\u201d (yes I travelled on my birthday and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/index.php\/2012\/11\/16\/a-surprise-birthday-party-at-34000-feet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> to read about the birthday surprise organised by my wife)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/12.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Una Sevena Restaurant at GUSR offers a simple selection of local and western cuisine. I was all set to indulge in local cuisine and went for the Sri Lankan Rice &amp; Curries set with fish curry as the main dish.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/13.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were literally treated like king and queen where at all-time two of the friendly staff were there to assist us if we needed anything. The guy serving the curry can even speak fluent Malay as he used to work in Malaysia a few years back.<\/p>\n<p>My LKR650 (RM15) meal! No way can you get this huge portion at such a cheap price in any four stars hotels in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/15.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yummy!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/16.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sleep time. Thousands kilometres away from Malaysia but GUSR\u2019s hospitality really made us feel like home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next day before we went for the Safari at Udawalawe National Park (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/index.php\/2012\/11\/28\/udawalawe-national-park-up-close-with-the-sri-lankan-wild-elephants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a> to read about that), we had a short walk around the hotel\u2019s compound.<\/p>\n<p>The rooms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/19.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bridge connecting the restaurant and the rooms\/lobby. On the right side is the open air theatre for future activities such as cultural shows. A natural waterway that during dry seasons the water would be much nicer. Since we went during rainy season it was a bit muddy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/20.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/21.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Breakfast for two. Included in the room rate.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the hotel and the staff for the warm Sri Lankan hospitality. We stayed for only one night (we will definitely stay longer on our next trip!) but based on my one-night experience and conversation with my guide, it is safe to say that G.U.S.R is a class above the rest when it comes to hotel facilities in this area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2012\/udawaweresort\/24.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So if you are visiting Udawalawe National Park or just like us being on the way to Yala National Park, spending a night or two at this resort is a perfect pit-stop. <del datetime=\"2013-01-14T10:15:29+00:00\">My only feedbacks to the hotel management are to have internet booking via normal sites such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agoda.com\/asia\/sri_lanka\/udawalawe\/grand_udawalawe_safari_resort.html?CID=1437595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AGODA<\/a> and to also provide in-room wifi facilities. <\/del> The hotel now accepts bookings on Agoda.com which is excellent as Agoda accepts major credit cards online and provides instant booking at great rates.
