{"id":1558,"date":"2011-12-17T17:28:44","date_gmt":"2011-12-17T09:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/?p=1558"},"modified":"2013-03-03T16:05:59","modified_gmt":"2013-03-03T08:05:59","slug":"yummy-licious-food-in-kuantan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuanzahdi.com\/index.php\/2011\/12\/17\/yummy-licious-food-in-kuantan\/","title":{"rendered":"Yummy-licious Food in Kuantan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After writing a few blog posts on interesting tourist attractions around Kuantan, I think it\u2019s only fair for me to dedicate one post on delicious food in Kuantan. <\/p>\n<p>In no particular order, here are some great \u2018makan\u2019 that we had as part of the Firefly familiarization tour. I am aware that I missed out a few famous \u2018must-try\u2019 food like Nasi Lemak Zaman but there\u2019s always a next trip to Kuantan \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with <strong>\u201cMEE CALONG BESERAH\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beserah is about 8km away from Kuantan and it took us about 10-15 minutes to get there by bus. We had our Mee Calong at the famous \u201cJoe Warung Mee Calong &#038; Keropok Beserah\u201d. It\u2019s by the roadside of the main stretch so it\u2019s not that difficult to spot this warung. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A simple warung setup. In my food dictionary, the simpler a warung is, the higher the possibility of it serving good food. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Mee Calong Beserah.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you ask me personally, I would describe Mee Calong as Mee Sup + Yong Tau Foo + keropok lekor + fish ball with the noodles made by mee lidi or dry noodle sticks. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So what actually is Calong? \u201cNo one really knows. Here\u2019s a better description of the history of Mee Calong. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A warung that comes with SOP on how to eat Mee Calong!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not convinced with the explanation, I went to attack the \u2018kitchen\u2019 to better understand Mee Calong. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This must be one of the \u2018unique features\u2019 of Mee Calong, the Keropok Leko.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No wonder the \u2018fish taste\u2019 of the soup is so good, look at the amount of fishballs, fishcake and other ingredients thrown into the soup. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/10.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019m not a big noodle fan, I would give Mee Calong 7.5\/10 for its unique taste and freshness of ingredients. Definitely a must try. <\/p>\n<p>Proud owners of the warung. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up is another warung that need no further introduction to Kuantan residents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Akob Patin House! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/12.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A normal malay Nasi campur setup but you can also request for the dishes to be served to your table. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/14.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The signature dish is of course \u2014 Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/15.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What else can I say\u2026 it\u2019s a combination of 2 of my favourite dishes, fresh ikan patin + tempoyak. I was in my own world for a good 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/16.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alhamdulillah, I had the opportunity to taste the fresh ikan patin and the cooking style is just perfect. Exactly as what I had in mind when people spoke to me about Akob Patin House prior to the trip. Soft texture and smells good all the way are indicators that the fish was fresh. <\/p>\n<p>Some other \u2018kampung style\u2019 dishes<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sambal Kicap + Sambal Belacan + Sambal Tempoyak<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ulam-ulam.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/19.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gulai lemak daging salai.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/20.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thumbs up! The owner entertained us well. All we had to do is to raise our left hand up for more rice. Many did not realised that I raised my hands 3 times. Yes, 4 plates of rice. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/21.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tapai for dessert. Cannot get any better than this. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/22.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last but definitely not least, allow me to share the delicious dinner we had at <strong>Ana Ikan Bakar Petai. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/23.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Tanjung Lumpur stretch in Kuantan are famous for many seafood stalls but Ana Ikan Bakar is always the first one being recommended whenever I speak to a Kuantan resident. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/24.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The signature dish \u2014 Ikan Bakar or Grilled fish with Petai. Perfect combination. I\u2019m a huge fan of petai so the addition of petai makes the fish even tastier. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/25.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lala sweet sour. Tasted quite ok and nothing special about it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/26.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kerabu Mangga and Mushroom. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/27.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ikan Tiga Rasa, suitable for those that does not eat petai or those that one fish is not enough\u2026. like me. Hehe \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/28.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Happy faces after a full day of GOOD FOOD!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.photobucket.com\/albums\/v37\/azuan1880\/blogs\/2011\/kuantanfood\/29.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Food is a a good enough reason to justify your trip to Kuantan. I can guarantee that you will be fully satisfied with my above recommendations.
