PETALING JAYA: Sixty-nine of Malaysia’s top athletes have so far been insured for more than RM2mil under the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM)-Carlsberg Athletes Retirement Scheme since 1994.
World No. 1 women’s squash player Nicol David and world No. 1 shuttler Lee Chong Wei are among the outstanding beneficiaries under the retirement scheme with total coverages of RM150,000 and RM130,000 respectively.
OCM president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaa’far said the retirement scheme, initiated after the success of the KL Commonwealth Games in 1998, was to appreciate the achievement of athletes who brought glory to the nation.

“It is an excellent way of rewarding the athletes and one that benefits their future,” said Tunku Imran at a ceremony to extend the partnership between OCM and Carlsberg Malaysia for another four years until 2012.
The OCM-Carlsberg Athletes Retirement Scheme is in the form of a whole life insurance policy for athletes who have won gold medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games and any medal at the Olympics.
