We arrived at our hotel/villa/suite whatever you call it and was amazed by how calm and quiet Santorini is during winter. It’s super crowded during summer and busy during other seasons but winter is almost dead. Not good news for someone who are looking for adventure and things to do but perfect for honeymoon couple from Malaysia that just want to do simple sightseeing, relax and away from my normal busy routine.

This is part 4 of my Honeymoon Trip Report

Part 1 can be read here, Part 2 can be read here and Part 3 can be read here

Most bars, clubs and hotels are closed during winter months but for those few that opens they offer special winter price which is really a bargain.

So because of winter I could afford this Honeymoon Suite for Euro140 per night. (Normal price Euro220)

It’s on a cliff so we had to go down almost 50 steps to reach our hotel. With 2 suitcase, it can be challenging. Lucky we have Mr Adreas to help us.

Our suite from outside…

Worth the money….beautiful and spacious…

From the reverse angel..

Comes with a personal Hot Tub…NICE!

And a kitchen…don’t laugh at my stocks…at least I didn’t bring my ‘periuk’!

For the few days in Santorini, we woke up, open our room door and get this view straight away…now that’s a good life!

When I thought that’s the best that could happen, I was wrong… Breakfast served at our own private terrace by again Mr Andre, who by the way is also the cook and handyman.
I just love the view. Breakfast could not be better…

Our daily routine was to go sightseeing and to make things easy, we decided to rent a car. It’s winter season so traffic is not too bad and it’s a small island anyway. So we decided to take advantage of renting a car that I will never afford to drive in Malaysia….

A Smart for 2!!! For 35 Euro a day.

As you can see in the photo above, this cute baby is not only a pleasure to drive but also very easy to park. We literally parked at the Black Beach and hang out there….we got almost the whole 5-10 km stretch to ourselves…..

Driving the smart for 2 was fun bu can be tricky due to the “drive on the other side of the road” factor and tight curves around the island’s coastal road.

From the highest point of the island. awesome view.

We also visited the Red Beach. All these places can be seen on the movie “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”

Santorini is also the place for those with much cooler and better cameras than mine

My current facebook photo…just love the scenery at the back..

Santorini, Oia in particular is famous for its sunset…

A nice truck…

Christmas celebration still going on

The fierce-looking cat of Santorini!

In general, Santorini is a good if not one of the best Honeymoon Destination that I can imagine. It’s very romantic.

Even the fierce cat is also romantic….
[

Coming up next, the last part,…..flight back home. I hope I’m not making you guys bored! hehe

From Athens, we made our move to Santorini Island! Being an aviation fan, this post covers the flight to Santorini. ….after 1 night in Athens, we made our move for Santorini Island, our main honeymoon destination where we spent 4 days of R&R and sightseeing…

This is part 2 of my Honeymoon Trip Report

Part 1 can be read here and Part 2 can be read here

We chose to fly instead of the 7-8 hours ferry/cruise due to the unpredictable winter weather. So we were back at Elefherios Venizelos Airport (ATH). We purchased Aegean Airline tickets online few weeks before we got married and managed to get an OK price for the short flight.

I love ATH airport, nice simple terminal with good ambience and natural feeling. Here is a photo of many rows of check-in counter.

Aegean Airline allow counter check-in, kiosk check in and web check in. We decided to use the self-service to choose our own seats and then later dropped our bags at one of the check-in counter.

The boarding pass.

To kill time, we had Fillet-o-Fish for lunch at McDonalds while I enjoyed this nice view.

…and catch up with the family back home

Yeah I know…something wrong about the photo above…hehe

Gate B28 for our flight…

A gate that is connected to a Bus…no, not Airbus but real BUS.

After a short bus ride, we arrived at a remote aircraft parking, and here we are, the beautiful Avro RJ100.

Tail shot…

The leather seats are 2×2 with nice pitch for a Regional Jet.

I managed to con…err I mean convince my wife to allow me to have her window seat..

Some stuff in-flight

The Inflight Magazine…(can take home!)

The crew was strict about electronics including DSLR so I could not get many photos on-board.

Take-off after a very short run…..NICE VIEW!

I love this Avro shades…

The light refreshment consists of sweets, peanuts and Orange Juice + Wet Towel and normal serviette.

We arrived in Santorini Island after a bumpy approach. Weather wasn;t good. Santorini receive very very little rain and even during winter it usually rains for 2-3 days in January. I was not too happy to know that the 2-3 day needs to be when I was there!

Luckily that was the only rain it was all sunshine for the rest of our stay in Santorini.

Santorini Airport is a combination of civil and military facility so photography was strictly prohibited. Nothing much to show anyway, the airport reminds me of the old Alor Star Airport. Very small, very manual, old and only a couple of flights per day.

We booked our Honeymoon Suite at a hotel called Mill House Suites after reading many good reviews about the place. More about this beautiful place in my next post tomorrow.

The hotel room came with free airport transfer.

We arrived at Mill House which is in between Fira and Firostefani. A nice hotel by the cliff.

A small 10-rooms hotel with this marvelous view.

*breathless* seeing is believing…

This is part 2 of my trip report to Athens and Santorini. Part 2 cover the sights of Athens from my Camera’s point of view.

Part 1 can be read here.

We were in Athens for 2 nights; 1 night before Santorini and another night after that. Our plan was to go crazy and be a tourist in Athens and chill out and be a honeymoon loving couple in Santorini. So while we were in Athens, we spent most of the time sightseeing and SHOPPING!

We started Athens on the wrong foot….we were ‘ripped off’ by the taxi driver. Prior to our honeymoon, I did some research and made a mental note that taxi cost about Euro30-40 from the Airport to Plaka. I was convinced that everything was ok since the driver insisted that he’susing the meter. Only when we arrived in Plaka, I was shocked to see the meter showed Euro60 as the total fare! I got no choice but to pay. Luckily all my other taxi rides were all OK.

The taxi driver was one ‘crazy’ man for charging me a different rate but he gave me a funny advice “Sir, your life will be different, I know you want to spend most of your time in Athens sightseeing, but you;ll ended up spending more time shopping” …well he is right

For our short stay in Athens, we stayed in cheap Hermes Hotel located strategically near to all the attractions and historical site.

It is so strategic that we were in the center of demonstration and so called ‘riots’ that happened throughout our stay in Greece. We felt safe as they do not bother to disturb tourists. Hermes Hotel is highly recommended for its location, good breakfast and nice but small and clean rooms.

After 2 flights, 13 hours in plane and 6 hours of transit in DXB, we were eager to explore Athens and after checked in went straight to explore the city.

The famous Syntagma Square with the huge Christmas tree that was brought down few times by the rioters.

Also in Syntagma Square…Christmas Deco. This Mat Misai trying to take my JIJI away hehe

The best gift that I got

Across the road, the Parliament.

And the Guard!

The next day before our flight to Santorini, we had a quick tour and shopping for souvenirs. Some sights of Athens from my camera:

The famous Acropolis.

View from top of Acropolis….awesome isn’t it..

It was freezing cold 9 degrees and raining cats and dogs but we were crazy enough to explore and walk for miles and miles! And to have this view, it’s worth it!

Public transport is quite affordable and efficient.

We went shopping at the Monastiraki Flea Market.

Nice design..

These sights also caught my eyes…

Buah Berangan and Corn Seller…

Trojan..

Clear Message don’t you think? hehe

Typical, tea and juice delivery…

If you think these photos are cool, wait till you see the Santorini photos coming up soon…

Magical.

If there’s one word to describe the whole ‘getting married’ process from the time I popped out the question, to engagement day, wedding preparations, solemnization and the ceremonies, it has to be the word “Magical”.

And what better way to celebrate a magical journey other than a blast ending. It was the finale of a series of feast, ceremony that was held in JB and Shah Alam. After half a day entertaining guests coming to the daytime session of the wedding ceremony, we were half dead but nevertheless excited for the wedding dinner function at home.

For previous posts on other parts of the magical journey, click on the links below:

a) <a href="http://www.azuanzahdi.com/?p=211%2@8otos in JB
b) Wedding Ceremony in Johor (Jiji’s side)
c) Wedding Ceremony in Shah Alam (Day)
d) Wedding Ceremony in Shah Alam (Night)
e) Honeymoon in Greece (few parts)
f) Behind the scene

The idea of having two sessions came from my family who thought that we never had the chance to meet and spend much time with close friends, family members and relatives during a normal Malay wedding because of the high number of guests. It was to some extent true as during the daytime ceremony, we hardly had any chance to seat or spent more than 5 minutes with one particular guest.

So just right after the last guest left the hall, me and Jiji had our late lunch together with my family finishing off the leftovers from the VIP table. We later hitchhiked on my wingman’s kelisa back to our home for a quick 15 minutes outdoor shooting.

5:00pm – I went to check on the preparation at home. It was an intensive preparation.

5:30pm – I took a nice refreshing shower and Jiji started another 2-hour of make-up session.

That night the theme was ‘Back to Kampung” which really translates into comfortable traditional style outfit, food and decoration. Without the budget of Ning Baizura, I can’t get real life goats or cows as decorations but I got the next best thing, plants and nice set of tents etc.

7:30pm – Performed Maghrib prayers and get ready for the finale. We were ready to go at 8:00am but were told to wait for the guests to settle down as there were more guests coming at a later time.

8:30pm – We finally walked the right carpet again with the sweet background sound of “Selawat”. I had a nice view of my parent’s house garden and could not believe my eyes. It was so beautiful…

Escorted by the sound of “Tercipta Untukku” specially remixed by me to fit my 2 minutes walk, we walked to the pelamin passing through our closest family members, relatives, neighbors and best friends.

08:35pm – We were seated on the garden’s gazebo with flashing cameras and a vide camera providing live feed to the guests sitting on the upper section of the garden.

The homemade pelamin was designed by my dad’s friends who really had no experience at all. They were bored and felt like contributing something to the wedding, hence the idea to build one homemade fantasy pelamin. The rest as they said was history…

I was told it has the element from “Ayat-ayat Cinta” where there are roses and floating elements. I say it’s a superb design and well executed

08:45pm – Prayer’s Recital by my “Brother”, Ustaz Din.

09:00pm – The beginning of an Aceh tradition. Since my mom ancestors are from Aceh and all of us can speak and understand the language, we decided to have some Aceh elements into the ceremony. It was the “Menyunting” ceremony where the bride and groom were ‘approved’ by parents and relatives from both side by putting ‘sticky glutinous rice’ or pulut at the back of our left ear. Weird? Yes for first timers but really the symbolic element is to ‘cool down’ and accept the new addition to the family. Sort of la kot…

09:20pm – With the background sound of “Ayat-ayat Cinta” we walked into the main table to join the guest for a nice kampong style white rice dinner. Yummmmyyy….Ikan Masin, Gulai Lemak, Ulam, Sambal Belacan, Ayam Goreng..yummy…

While we were entertained by my friends who ‘contribute’ few songs. Kudos to them despite the tremendous pressure, low tech equipment, no practice and last minute planning, they pulled off a decent show. Of course there are parts where they were not at the ‘best tone’ but they entertained many with most of the songs.

09:45pm – We went back to the gazebo and cut a 3-layers cake. Nobody briefed me that all three layers are mock, hence it took me a while and I almost spoil the cake. Hehehe that’s why anyone should have rehearsal!

10:00pm – We were then told that there’s a surprise from my Dad. He had discreetly hired a nice instrumental band with their drums and flutes that played awesome tunes for a solid 1 hour. It was a pleasant surprise and we enjoyed every second of it and I’m sure most of the guests enjoyed it too.

Before we knew it, it was all over, we went round and spent a good time laughing and sharing small talks with the beloved guests. My friends took turn karaoke-ing and me and Jiji were asked by friends to sing ‘our song’ of Jangan Pisahkan.

Overall it was a magical night to top off a fantasy journey. I can’t say it enough but many many thanks to my family who organize the whole 2 ceremony without an event planner. Also to my friends, ex-SIFE students who proved to each other that we still got ‘the skills’ in organizing an event. I guess we still got our “German 2003” talent

I’ll next begin my trip report for Athens and Santorini! till next time.

d) Wedding Ceremony in Shah Alam (Night)
e) Honeymoon in Greece (few parts)
f) Behind the scene

From Johor, a week later the festivities continue in Shah Alam for the wedding reception in Shah Alam. Dubbed as the “Menyambut Menantu” ceremony, there were two receptions on 3rd of January 2009. From 12pm-4pm in Dewan Kebudayaan Selangor in Section 7 and in the evening a smaller dinner reception at my house.

I will simply use photos to describe one of the best (not to say hectic) days in my life!

I woke up at 6:30 am after sleeping for only few hours. Being a SIFE guy, I simply can’t let people to to the show 100%. Somehow I felt it’s partly my responsibility to assist my family and friends in tying up the loose ends the previous night. Hence I only went to bed at 2am and 4 hours later I was already up for the big day.

I woke up and was told that everything until to the very detail of putting up signs to the venue have been taken care off. I’m glad to have a great family and friends.

After Morning Prayer, Jiji and I went straight to preparing the ‘bride’s and groom’s room. We slept on the floor that previous night since our bed was already decorated with roses and all. The festivity mood is in the air as relatives start to drop by on that wet morning offering their bit of help.

10.00 am – The 2-hour makeup session begins. We hired the expertise of Sheila and Erina from S’flair Bridal and they are AWESOME! Their work are excellent, value for money but what I appreciate most is how professional and friendly these people are.

I find it funny that Jiji took 2-hour to get ready and it took me like 2 minutes. Hehehe I guess it’s the advantage of being a guy

12.00 noon – While waiting for the cue to go to the hall, we utilized a few minutes of ‘extra time’ to pose inside the empty house.

12.30 pm – Time to roll. We begin another day of ‘smiling, shaking hands and pretending to know every single person we meet’!

12.45 pm – Arrived in Dewan Belia dan Kebudayaan Selangor with rounds of kompang, a traditional musical instrument. As the bride’s assistance could not make it due to health reason, my friend has to be the wingman for both me and Jiji.

1.00 pm – Walked on the red carpet with at least 50 cameras and 300 pairs of eyes on us at one time. What a feeling. Nervous? Yes Excited? Hell yes! We walked with the great sound of Selawat for the Prophet Muhammad as background. Awesome.

1.15 pm – I opted not to ‘bersanding’ for the daytime ceremony as I think it’s a waste to have 2 pelamins and I’m not a big fan of bersanding anyway. So we went straight to the “Makan Beradab” which is where the bride and groom have lunch with the visiting jiji’s family and the rest of the guests.

The high-table

2.00 pm – After lunch, we had the ‘pulut kuning’ ceremony. Just like cake-cutting but using pulut instead. I love this photo except for the fact that Selangor MB at the back Spoil the photo…

2.00 – 4.00 pm – For the 2 hours we were standing and shook hands with hundreds of guest thanking them for coming and shared laughters, stories, hugs and kisses. Awesome but tiring 2 hours!

It’s impossible to share all the photos but some guest photos can be seen at my facebook album.

In the end, 1,000 + guests were entertained within a span of 4 hours and many smiles, handshakes, hugs and kisses were shared. In between guests, we managed to squeeze some spontaneous photos for our personal album.

Most of the guests were my parent’s friends, family friends, relatives, colleagues and of course my friends. This is a common thing for a malay wedding feast.

But this is something not common!

I love this idea from my dad who hired the clown to entertain the kids to ensure EVERYONE goes home with a smile

I would like to extend my special gratitude towards my family for being the backbone of the wedding ceremony and of course for sponsoring it.

And also my friends who sleep late and wake up at 4am to ensure a great day for us

Thanks guys. We only had our real meal after 4pm. Just an hour before we begin the preparation for the night ceremony.

The next part will cover the evening ceremony at home with of course more great photos.

e) Honeymoon in Greece (few parts)
f) Behind the scene

After the morning event of solemnization, I was officially a husband to Jiji and was welcomed to the family with smiles, and positive remarks. I was glad as I venture into this unknown territory of future role as a leader to my family.

Right after the solemnization, I went back to the hotel. I changed my baju melayu into something comfortable, grab a couple of 100 plus, packed-up and left to Jiji’s family house.

Along with my wingmen, we dropped by at Dewan Hayati, Kompleks Mawar for the rehearsal for the Ceremony the same night. It was a full-scale rehearsal involving the flower girls, family of Jiji, the band ‘gohead gostan’ and our best man and brides’ maid.

The only thing missing was the food…<sigh>

Before I left, putting up a full scale banner at the entrance of the complex. Not everyday I can do this!

By 6pm I arrived at Jiji’s house to get ready for the function. I left my DSLR with my wingmen hence I got no photos of us getting ready. Official photographer will have it but I will not include it yet as it has not been edited yet.

8pm- While we were standing by and getting ready at the house, guests started to arrive in Dewan Mawar. Mostly relatives and friends of Jiji’s Parents and family.

It was a nicely decorated hall with fresh flowers on the ‘pelamin’ and expensive tableware used for the main table.

8.30pm – Jiji and me arrived at the hall. Red carpet treatment with the sweet sound of Selawat guiding us straight to the beautiful pelamin escorted by pretty flower girls.

8.40 pm – Prayer recital by the same Imam who ‘akad nikah’ me in the morning.

8.45pm – It was then the normal ‘merenjis ceremony’ I wish I can tell more but you have to wikipedia for more info as I myself was not sure about the rationale of the items being used. It has something to do with the tradition of Malay ancestors from past generations.

There was no egg during rehearsal. I was really close to actually swallowing the whole thing. Luckily Jiji whispered to me “kiss the egg”!

9.00pm – We had dinner with the rest of the guests. It was full house and we were sitted at the main table. Awesome man! Good food…too bad can’t eat much

I’m a celebrity…door gift for all.

9.15 pm – We had the cake cutting ceremony which was beautiful with live band playing “Aku dan Dirimu” as the muci background.

The rest of the event was shaking hands and thanking the guest for coming to our big day. Thank you to Jiji’s family for hosting a great ceremony, great food and lovely band playing all night.

After the guests went home, we started taking photos with families and close friends.

It has been 3 weeks since I got married and it’s about time I post the ‘stories’ behind this once in a lifetime adventure from a bachelor to a husband in a series of post exclusively on azuanzahdi.com.

Before i begin, allow me to thank all of you out there involved in the preparation of our weddings. Thank you.

Part 1 covers the solemnization or ‘akad nikah’ which in the most important phase of the whole wedding event. The akad nikah is where a muslim malay officially be married according to Islam.

(All photos are courtesy of my brother’s Sonly Alpha 700)

On 26th Dec, a day before the akad nikah ceremony, my family and relatives traveled down to JB for the akad nikah and wedding dinner ceremony for the bride’s family. 3 cars from Shah Alam, a car from Alor Star, a car from Kuantan, 3 cars from Batu Pahat and 3 cars from KL all met up at JB for my big day.

Preparations for the akad nikah ceremony goes way back few months earlier, preparing for the wedding gifts, sourcing for funds to be used as ‘duit hantaran’, getting the necessary arrangements to be ready such as caterer, f&b, logistics, video, photography, costumes, invites etc. It all goes to this 27th Dec 2008 weekend and the weekend after that.

On the way from Shah Alam to JB, I drove my altis with two of my best friends, Zamil and Aie. Despite many of my uncles and aunties advising me not to drive, I love my altis too much and driving kept my nerves calm for the 3.5 hours journey. Everything went as planned except when we almost reached JB when my car was flagged down by a police pajero for speeding. I was told by the officer that I was running at 130++ km/h. I am someone with dignity and never give away ‘coffee money’ to the police so I was ready to take the speeding ticket. As a last resort I tried apologizing and telling the officer the truth that I am really going for an akad nikah ceremony. He saw my baju melayu and some documents at the back seat and to my surprise he let us go with a friendly warning I guess luck was really on my side…

Once we arrived safely in the hotel, I got my 2 little fingers on both hands dyed with henna as part of the berinai ceremony. The only thing missing was the ceremony as I got it in the comfort of my hotel room with the help of my sis-in law.

27th Dec 2008 (Morning)

D-Day.

5.30am – Woke up early and wakes up my 2 best men. All set for a very long day.

6.00am – Had breakfast at the hotel coffee house the second they start serving breakfast.

6.30am – Had the bath according to custom as ‘cooldown bath’ to make sure I’m calm throughout the day. Any 6.30 am bath with cold water and lime and flowers will make a human being cool! Followed by Subuh prayer

7.00am – Get ready with new pair of white baju melayu given during my engagement ceremony by my bride. Sampin is the same sampan worn by my brother during his akad-nikah as part of ‘turun-temurun’ family tradition.

With the help of my mum, who spearheaded the coordination of our family for the wedding

And of course my best men

9.00am – Last minute preparation at the hotel lobby while waiting for the rest of the family to get ready

Family photo

9.30am – My family delegation arrived at bride’s family house in Straits View.

Heart pounding while waiting for the imam

10.20am – The moment of truth. I am officially married. With a single verse, I an officially the husband of Nur Jihan Fadzil or Jiji in short.

Tears from my eyes started to flow as I was too happy and proud. Both of us were raised up in a very well-mannered family and now I take the hands of Jiji from her family.

I was asked to read few emotional paragraphs asking permission from Jiji’s parents to take her away. I was prepared for this moment but still it proved to be too emotional.

11.00am – I thank God and still thanking God for what I get.

11.15am – For the first time, Jiji take my hands as a husband.

11.30am – Both families exchanged the wedding gifts.

More photos on my Facebook.

I will continue with the next post on the wedding reception held in Kompleks Mawar JB on the same day.

Yes, it is one of many reasons why I’ve not been posting on my own blog. I’ve been occupied with million of things to do as preparation for the big day coming very soon.

One of the most frequently visited store is Jakel, a centre for bridal wear which offers the latest design patterns and colours located at Masjid India. Jakel offers a wide variety of products from bridal wear to bedroom sets and they even boast of having the largest collection of silk in Malaysia with over 5,000 designs and colours. Jakel also has a wide range to cater for wedding needs, dinner functions and special occasions

The best part is just like other stores in Jalan TAR, customers are expected to bargain for a reasonable price.

My fiancée takes the lead when it comes to shopping. We know our ‘areas of expertise’

With 4 floors of stuff, Jakel can be one confusing store

Once the colors and materials have been chosen, it’s off to bridal/designer for design and tailoring.

Shopping occupy most of my weekend and some of the weeknights, on top of that I still have to prepare all the necessary wedding paperwork. One of it is the HIV test. It is now mandatory and I think it is a very good measures. I’m relieved to know that I’m HIV Negative (you never know right!~!)

The clinic…

The HIV test brought me for the first time in my life to a Government Clinic. Despite the rundown interior, it was good to spend some time there. The level of efficiency is quite good. I was number ‘120’ and the screen was showing ‘102’. I waited for only 30 minutes which is quite good for a public clinic standard. The test result was out within 5 minutes. The staffs are friendly and being a fan of people watching, I had fun talking and meeting people from different walks of life. I even sat next to a ‘suspect’ who was in full orange lock-up suit, handcuffed and escorted by 2 cops

With so many things to do, I sometimes wonder what motivates me. Of course being me, I always try to make the best of things, finding things to drive my spirit up even on the worst case scenario.

For example, Jalan TAR where my tailor, Jakel and SFF are located is always crowded. Parking can be a nightmare and just last week it took me 2 hours to reach Jalan TAR from Jalan Tun Razak which normally takes 20 minutes. Yet I try to find a good motivation to go there almost once every 2 weeks. And I found this…

One of the best Indian-style Nasi Bryinani. Available in the famous Restoran Insaf for a whopping RM11 per plate.

If Nasi Briyani does not motivates me enough, there’s always funny things to see in Jalan TAR like this sign in Jakel

I never imagine Wayne Rooney is so famous in textile world

Of course, all these small things makes me lift my feet and sacrifice my weekends, but what motivates me the most is the fact that I’m going to marry my dream girl and that’s one hell of a motivation
