Earth Hour 2008 – Join me in Changing The World!

Ladies and Gentleman,

“How can we inspire people to take action on climate change? ”

The question was asked to people of Australia (Sydney to be specific) and here is their collective answer “Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour”. Guess what, that was exactly what the people of Sydney did last year!

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Who could have thought, changing the world can be this easy?

Earth Hour 2007 was a Sydney event. The tremendous success last year has encouraged the people behind the initiative to launch Earth Hour 2008 as a global movement. As a result, at 8pm March 29, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.

And here’s the best part, Malaysians are making sure that Malaysia will be part of the Earth Hour 2008. What can you do to support? You can…

a) Sign up for Earth Hour 2008 and commit that for one hour on 8pm March 29,2008 (local time) you will switch off your lights.
b) Get involved and create a bigger, better Earth Hour
c) Reduce your impact on climate change in your daily life (e.g.: Switch off your PC when you’re not using, or use less Air-Con at work during rainy season)
d) Create your own Earth Hour event (more of this later in this post)
e) Know your footprint and challenge your friends – I am challenging you!

And as of today, 184,453 people have commited worldwide, 2,544 People have registered from Malaysia, and 67 from Shah Alam!

I challenge my friends out there who read my blog, join in this effort and for one hour, let’s make a difference. Share it with your friends and family and ask them to share with their friends and family.

If there’s many of my friends going for this, i might organize something. It would be fun to gather friends, switch off the lights and just chit chat with good food with only candles lighting the room. It would be fun and something to blog about and share with the rest of participants worldwide. Come lah and register now! If you have problems going into the page, click here for the main homepage.

Let’s Change The World :) One step at a time and one day hopefully we can do this in KL and shut off the KLCC lights just like how they shut Opera House’s lights for one hour.

  3. [...] I did my part…. For one hour between 8pm-9pm, I switched off my lights, air-con and other unnecessary electrical appliances as part of a symbolic gesture of Global Warning awareness carried out worldwide known as Earth Hour 2008. If you live in cave and never heard about Earth Hour, do read my previous post here or go straight to Earth Hour’s website. [...]
